Charcoal Emotion

Artist Statement:

My inspiration for this piece was a painting of an umbrella in the shape of an elephant that was in the rain. I wanted to make my piece original so I connected the aspects of my inspiration with a jellyfish because they're umbrella-shaped creatures. I also got inspired by the way the jellyfish characters from the movie shark tale looked. As a result, I decided my subject matter would be a girl with braids as tentacles or an umbrella handle and the rest of her body would be tentacles as well.

The first thing I did was paint my background. I had a difficult time layering my canvas but once I got the hang of it I sketched the design of my subject matter while I waited for my canvas to dry. The next thing I did was add dark blues to add value to the puddle and half of the clouds. Then I drew the jellyfish head and the rest of the body. After that, I added more details in the clouds and the trees. Then I added highlights to the jellyfish head and to the puddle to show raindrop falling and the rain. Lastly, I went back over the corners to add shadows and I use white to add contrast and highlight again.
